| Can he still be considered playback king currently as Sonu has squandered his opportunities in the last 2 years and Shaan is somewhat close??? |

| yup, its changing, but it depends on each individual's choice.......My most favorite Bollywood playback singer is still Udit Narayan.......and only after him comes Shaan, KK, and Sonu....... |

tulip, hopefully not that order!
for me sonu ranks high up! KK follows close, but still Sonu is Sonu!! I wish he would sing more and choose only good songs to sing(i think he is doing that!) _________________ :: neha ::

yeah, doesn't look like Sonu want to break the record for the maximum number of mediocre playback songs. He is very driven and ambitious - he's done music videos and he's been a lead in a couple or more movies.
i don't think he wants to end up like Sanu - singing dated songs in bay area hotels. |

Sonu is the best...I will place KK just above shaan ...because shaaan is made to sing same kind of soft sweet songs...while KK has variety and sung songs like Tadap Tadap Ke, O Humdum Suniyo Re , Yaaron Dosti etc... _________________ Mandar

i feel that udit narayan can still be termed way ahead of todays singers, shaan, sonu included. many may disagree but i feel sonu is probably the most overrated singer...not that he is bad, he is very good but in the last 2 years he has detiorated....he is also losing his popularity to shaan who is much more versatile than sonu....i feel that sonu should take a break and come back with a bang....but shaan seems to be unbeatable at present...shaan's silky voice just calms your mind and sonu's almost girlish voice has become too common...
udit's fine baritone too is rarely heard but when he sings you have to listen....he is way ahead of the rest....if there wasn't an udit there wud have been no sonu, shaan or anyone else......
i loved sonu when i heard Kal Ho Naa Ho... but when i heard udit sing Main Yahaan Hoon... from Veer-Zaara and Yeh Tara Woh Tara... from Swades listening to these 2 songs is enough....these songs prove how much more versatile udit is than sonu.... |

| I agree with Ehsaanji......there are so many great singers in SRGMP Challenge 07 this year....Raja Hasan(sings from his heart), Harpreet Deol(got such a high range), Aneek Dhar(all-rounder), Amanat Ali(best in classical, and slow songs, ghazals) are the best, Vishal-Shekhar has already singned all of them for their new label "Vishal-Shekhar Music"...............Also, in II3 there is Amit Paul(OMG! such a excellent singer)............Also, SEL should work with Javed Ali again, who sang in your "Kajra Re", Javed's voice is fantastic, he rocked in Naqaab with "Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein" |

Well said...I agree... you require music directors who hunt for different voices and mold raw talent..like ARR did to Iyer with roobaro... or SEL with nihira , also , in this regard, Vishal Shekhar (VS) have played a great role in creating the right environment for SRGMP 07....which was not there in SRGMP 05 (too much of gharenebazi as that time),.
VS participate enthusiastially, many times whistling , clapping, giving standing ovations, and showering appreciation on their co-judges , contestants, and sometimes on their peers like SEL, when they come across a good song. I enjoy watching VS on SRGMP as their demeanor is very natural, unlike himesh, who i feel mostly tries to play to the gallary ('roti milni chahiye stuff' ), and takes his fan for granted('mere fans ise vote karein').... but then himesh's 'i am rockstar and always right' attitude is also fun to watch and people like it.
Nice to see VS giving chance to so many singers. VS Rock.
Alas, on this forum, there aren't many VS fans here... _________________ Mandar

Hey mtabib, I too am a fan of Vishal- Shekhar, so there is no need to be disheartened. I also agree with Ehsaan about using new singers. Someone mentioned Amit Paul of Indian Idol 3, well I must say that he has immense potential. I just watched his Gala Round performance where he rendered Pehla Nasha... All the judges gave him a standing ovation and were remarkably impressed. As the song is an Udit song he too joined Amit on stage and the energy radiated was vibrant. Amit is a fine answer to those composers in search of a new voice as Anu Malik rightly pointed out- "Amit Paul can handle songs sung by any male singer with a class of his own."
Also watching Udit perform was wonderful, he can still hold you with his charming voice. It is a pity that many popular songs sung by Udit are still heard by people who don't know who the actual singer is. This, I feel is a reason why Udit Narayan isn't as popular as many of his contemporaries.

hey, mtabib.....
Don't worry......I am with you.......I am one of the biggest fans of SEL and VS as well.........
VS are so honest, down-to-earth, and energetic, they support who ever sang well even the contestant is not from their Gharana......they don't deal with my gharana and your gharana issues.......for them everybody is same.....they never request the public to vote for him or her......that's the one of the many many great qualitites of theirs.....
Whenever they go on stage, they always rock, they are very hott and cute, vertile singers, composers, performers.....Vishal is more western and Shekhar is more eastern and together they make great songs........I just love this guys.......I just can't wait to see these guys on SRGMP 07 every Fri-Sat.....they are great combination......... |

Hey amit,tulip,ankush..thanks friends....really nice to read your comments...thnaks...
I agree, that SEL are best and have proved themselves...i am a big SEL fan...I an VS fan too, i also feel that they are third best composers but i like them more because of their nature and conduct, they show respect and appreciation towards other people's work and have big heart (standing ovations and cheering for candidates)
@ankush: yes, their groovy compositions have become bigger hits, but they have composed great soft melodious music like in Jhankaar Beats for which they one R.D.Burman award, and 'Dil Se Mere' and other songs in Pyar mein kabhi kabhi , amongst recent compositions listen to 'Halke Halke' and 'Jaane Hai Woh Kahan' in Honeymoon travels (actually the folky n grovvy sajna vari vari became more popular from this album), then , there is Tinka-Tinka from Karam. The list of such songs are long, but, then it is their grovvy numbers that have won them accolades. _________________ Mandar
